Fungal Nails

Fed up with unsightly fungal nails - The Lacuna Method has arrived!!

Fungal Nail Infection (onychomycosis) is the most difficult of the superficial fungal infections to treat, as most topical agents are ineffective at penetrating the nail plate to reach the active infection on the nail bed (the skin under the nail).

The Lacuna Method, involves drilling multiple micro holes through the nail plate allowing our podiatrist to apply an anti fungal spray (Lamisil at 1% Terbinafine) directly to the affected nail bed. The pressure from footwear on the nail plate and general walking, helps redistribute the anti fungal treatment under the surface of the nail, hence attacking the fungal spores where they are at their most active.

As with any antifungal treatment, this takes time, as the infection will clear only as fast as your toenails grow. Realistically, this can take up to 18 months. Review appointments are recommended on average every 6-8 weeks and may, or may not include the redrilling of the micro holes. Our Podiatrist will ensure that you are fully informed at every stage of the treatment.
